Guarding Our Hearts Against the Temptation of Idols

As John concludes the book of 1 John, he says “Little children guard yourselves from idols.”  John is issuing a warning to those he had been privileged to teach.  The warning was to be sure that they took the time to guard or protect themselves from things that easily could become more important to them than their relationship with Jesus.

Today, we find ourselves in need of guarding our hearts as well.  This involves being sure that we keep things in the proper place.  Things such as money or possessions, relationships and even religious activities can become our idols, if we are not careful.  These things, which may actually be good things, can if left unguarded become more important to us than our relationship with Jesus.  Jesus alone deserves to be on the throne of our hearts.  We must be intentionally guarding or protecting ourselves from idols.

We do so by spending time in the Word.  We must be diligent in our study of God’s Word, allowing Him to speak to us through His Word on a daily basis.  This is a necessary practice in guarding our hearts.  We also need a consistent prayer time.  Spending time daily in a two-way conversation with our Father is very important.  Lastly, we need each other.  God will use other Christians to hold us accountable in guarding our hearts.     Thank you so much for praying and giving and for being such an important part of Complete in Christ Ministries.  We pray that you and your family will have a blessed Thanksgiving season as we thank God for all He continues to do in our lives and the gracious way that He provides for all our needs.
